How to study exercise selection as a PT student
A worksheet for comparing exercise options, their purpose and the questions an assessment must answer.
Name the purpose before the exercise
Write the intended learning goal: mobility, strength, endurance, balance or practising a task. List the assessment information you would need before choosing an exercise for an individual. A condition label alone is not a complete prescription.
Compare two options
Choose two examples from your study material. Compare starting position, support, equipment, movement range and load. Describe what makes each option different without assuming one is automatically better.
Make the dose explicit
Identify the missing decisions: repetitions or hold duration, sets, effort or resistance, rest and frequency. Explain how you would evaluate the response under supervision. Do not turn an illustrative repetition count into a universal treatment protocol.
Choose a reassessment question
State what you would compare after the trial, what might justify an easier variation, and what would require further assessment. Bring your reasoning to an instructor or supervising clinician. This worksheet supports education; it does not prescribe treatment.
Your next step
Write one learning goal, one uncertainty and one question to check with your instructor. Save this page using your browser’s print or PDF option.
