01 · A request with two pressures

You volunteer on a student grant committee. The committee’s stated rule keeps individual reviewer notes confidential. A close friend who applied asks you to share another reviewer’s private comments before the final decision. Your friend is anxious and wants to improve their application. You want to help, but you do not have authority to disclose those notes. The problem is not simply whether you are kind or strict. It is how to respect the relationship while protecting a fair process.

02 · Map the responsibilities

Start with the people affected: your friend, other applicants, reviewers and the committee. Your friend needs a respectful explanation. Other applicants need consistent access to the process. Reviewers provided notes under the stated confidentiality rule. Your role does not include granting exceptions. Keep the facts specific. We are using the fictional rule in this scenario, not making a universal legal claim about every committee. Also disclose your relationship through the committee’s conflict process and follow its guidance on participation.
