Fairness before certainty
Reason openly under uncertainty

01 · Hear the conflict before judging it
You are helping at a student conference. Two volunteers arrive for the same presentation slot. Jordan says: Here is my booking email. Sam says: An organizer promised me this slot. Both prepared for weeks, and the session starts soon. You have a conflict to resolve. You do not yet have evidence that either person acted dishonestly. Start by separating what you know from what you are assuming.
02 · Turn empathy into an action
Saying I would be empathetic leaves the action unexplained. Try a concrete opening: I can see that both of you prepared for this. Let me check the booking details. That acknowledges the impact and names a useful next step. Jordan's email is evidence. Sam's reported promise is information to verify, not a reason to accuse Sam. Explain what you can check and who can authorize a change. Your first takeaway: show respect through a fair process, while keeping uncertainty visible.
