CPTE CANDIDATE STARTING POINT

Understand the format. Practise the right tasks.

The Canadian Physiotherapy Examination combines written and oral assessment. Your preparation should include both choosing a defensible answer and explaining your reasoning aloud.

Official information checked October 4, 2026. Recheck CAPR before acting on exam logistics or requirements.

The official format at a glance

Written section

2.5 hours. A 100-point section using multiple-choice and media-enhanced multiple-choice questions.

Oral section

2.5 hours. A 150-point, case-based section in which candidates respond verbally to examiners.

CAPR describes a five-hour virtual, remotely proctored examination with no test centres. The pass/fail outcome is based on combined performance across the two sections.

Try the official exam-platform tutorial

CAPR’s Practice Tools page explains how to open the written and oral CPTE tutorials, including an oral example case. Use these for the official platform controls and exam-day interface; QuietStride’s sample is an independent learning experience.

The same CAPR page also describes a separate Written Component practice exam developed for the older PCE blueprint. Do not mistake that practice resource’s question count or timing for the current CPTE format above. Follow CAPR’s current instructions for each resource.

Turn the format into a study routine

  1. Read the blueprint before organizing topics. Use CAPR’s framework to check coverage. Do not infer official weighting from a prep provider’s chapter count or a handful of sample questions.
  2. Practise explaining what the evidence supports. In written practice, identify the specific detail behind your choice and why alternatives are less appropriate.
  3. Make speaking a regular task. A written outline can organize thoughts, but does not substitute for answering aloud. Practise linking findings, priorities and follow-through in plain language.
  4. Separate learning from simulation. Short sessions with references build understanding. Timed practice can reveal pacing and organization gaps. Review both.

What free sample questions can and cannot show

A small sample lets you inspect clarity, explanations and how a provider approaches reasoning. It cannot reproduce the full blueprint or establish that you are ready. QuietStride’s free sample contains four written questions and one oral case from its independent educational material.

Keep sample evidence separate from a readiness claim

Record what you actually observed in a sample and what remains unknown before comparing resources.

Do I need to buy a preparation course?

These free tools do not require a purchase. Decide what support is missing from your current study: organized teaching, more practice or a way to review. Compare content, access terms and the sample experience before choosing a paid resource. Check the Complete CPTE Prep scope and individual mock options if they fit your needs.
